Asphalt to the edge of the retaining wall by the drive or not?

(Brevard, NC)

A new house/driveway in the mountains. Should the edges of the asphalt driveway meet the bottom of our retaining wall or should we have cut-outs w/mulch there for better appearance? I'm concerned about the cut-outs freezing or holding water/snow. We live in Brevard, N.C. Thank you for your time.

Yes, you are absolutely right about this open strip of earth being a place where water would collect and possibly harm the asphalt. I recommend taking the asphalt to the retaining wall. To soften the appearance of this area, some plants behind the retaining that can drape over the top edge of it may be nice.

Thanks for visiting my site and asking your question. Good luck with your project.
